Working with Global Mapper: 3D Visualization with Landsat and SRTM (3-arc second resolution)

Bismillahirrahmanirrahiim,

It has been long time I never update my page due to my activity here in Japan.

At this moment I want to share how to make 3D visualization in Global Mapper using Landsat Satellite Imagery and SRTM (3- arc second resolution), based on Online Data Source (Registered GM only!)

Firstly launch your GM, and select “Open Your Own Data Files”, in this case I used Riau Province boundary shape file.

Lauch your dataset
Select your base map (in this case I used Riau Province Boundary)

Select

the Projection: Geographic

Datum: WGS84

Planar Units: Arc Degrees

Elevation Units: Meter

Set the Projection, Datum, Planar Units and Elevation Units

Now move your cursor to “Download Online Data” and select “SRTM Worldwide Elevation Data”, let “Select Area to Download” at “Current Screen Bound” and then click “OK”

Select SRTM data to download as the current base map (current screen bound)

Your spatial data going to be like this

Now download “Landsat7 Global Imagery Mosaic” from “Download Online Data” let “Select Area to Download” at “Current Screen Bound” and then click “OK”

Select "Configure"

Move your cursor to “Tools” toolbar and select “Configure…”-“Vertical Options”- set to Daylight shader. Change Altitude to 45 and Azimuth to 345 in “Light Direction” box

Then, move to “Shader Option” – Surface color in “Daylight shader” box, choose the gray color – OK

Now your SRTM data going to be like this

Next, got to “Open Control Center” turn on your Landsat7 data and click “Options”, set Transparent to 73% in “Translucency” box. (this step depend on your self, you can set to the best visualization)

To make 3D visualization, move your cursor to “Show 3D view” toolbar, GM will open new window for you and your spatial data going to be like this. Use the toolbar on the top 3D window to modified your visualization.

Well done, we just finish this simple tutorial. Next time I will share to you how to work with ILWIS 3.6 to distinguish land use land cover from Landsat 7 ETM+. I hope I have enough time to do this.
